the Orion LiveMusic Showcases Present:

a pair of Norwegian jazz combos featuring

Bushman’s Revenge

with

Cortex

Our final show for the fall semester happens Saturday night, December 7th, when we feature two excellent bands from Norway – Bushman’s Revenge and Cortex.  Our 2013 showcases have been fantastic and this show certainly puts an exclamation point on it!  I hope you’ll chose to join us.

Do you like your jazz served up dark and sludgy, infused with just the right amounts of melodies and shred?  If so then you’re gonna love this one! Bushman’s Revenge bring it on with Hendrix-like  psychedelic heavy blues and jazz. A trio comprised of Rune Nergaard (bass guitar), Gard Nilssen (drums), and Even Helte Hermansen on gluitar, Bushman’s Revenge is coming to the US having just released their fifth album, “Thou Shalt Boogie” on Rune Grammofon records.  Their music has been described as “a thunderous, improvised blend of bluesy rock and heavier jazz sounds …. breakneck rhythms and blistering power chords are set beside lovely Zeppelin-like laments.”  To me they’re like a combination of the urgent, driving fuzz-toned rhythm sounds of Zevious, the fusion shredding of The Aristocrats, and the tight interlocking lead and rhythm interchange of bands like The Ahleuchatistas.  Ya – they’re that good!  Lots of “whao – what is that yer playing there?” from people at our most recent show as I featured two Bushman’s albums between sets.

Cortex is a high-energy jazz quartet assembled in 2007 by trumpeter Thomas Johansson, with Kristoffer Alberts (sax), Ola Høyer (bass) and Gard Nilssen (also of Bushman’s Revenge, on drums).  Their music follows the free jazz legacy a la Ornette Coleman and features original compositions and uncompromising performances inspired by other powerful Scandinavian outfits such as Atomic, The Core and The Thing.  The dual-headed monster of Alberts blistering sax and Johansson’s trumpet exchange confident and challenging solos which frame the unstoppable, muscular drive of Høyer’s and Nilssen’s rhythm.  The band’s second and most recent release, “Göteborg” (on Gigafon Records), showcases the band’s fearless explorations into high-octane jazz composition (mostly Johansson’s) and improvisation that have placed Cortex at the top of the Scandanavian jazz scene. In short – these guys absolutly cook!
